HUMANITIES CORE COURSE 1C, SPRING 2005
ESSAY 8: RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN THE UCI LIBRARIES STACKS

Many of the books that you may find helpful as you research and develop your argument are available in the UCI Libraries stacks.  You can search for books using ANTPAC (as outlined in Discovery Task 6) in order to find the best sources for your essay.

Books in the stacks can be checked out by UCI students for 28 days, and can be renewed indefinitely, unless requested by another user.

Antpac will indicate whether a book is held at the Langson Library or at another location on campus.  If an entry is listed as "SCI BAR" or "SCI-TEMP," it is shelved in the Science Library and can be checked out there.

Books listed as "SRLF Storage" are housed at the Southern Regional Storage Facility, and need to be checked out through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  To request an SRLF document, use the electronic Interlibrary Loan Forms, which you can access from the ANTPAC Homepage (just click on the "Interlibrary Loan / DDS" button).

Entries listed as "Langson 1st Floor Micro" are on microfilm, and can be found on the 1st floor of the Langson Library.  Microfilm reels are for library use only -- microfilm reading machines are also located on the Library's 1st floor.

To check and see if a book is currently checked out, look it up on ANTPAC.  If the book you want is checked out, you can place a hold on the book (click on the "Request/Hold Item" button on the screen where your search information is displayed), and you will automatically be placed next in line to receive the item (unless it has already been requested by another patron).  You can also use the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to request another copy of the book from a non-UCI library that carries the volume.   (When you make the request, be sure to note the reason why you cannot check out UCI's copy of the book -- it is currently checked out, it is listed as "not checked out" on ANTPAC but is missing from the stacks, etc.)

Also, remember to use MELVYL to search for books and other documents that are not owned by UCI, but are available at other UC campuses.  You can use either the Request function when using Melvyl, or the electronic Interlibrary Loan Forms to request these materials; it usually takes 7-10 days for ILL to get them, so plan ahead.

Be sure to check the other links on the Essay 8: Resources Available at the UCI Libraries to see if other divisions of the UCI Main Library have resources that you can use for your research project.

IMPORTANT: Be courteous to your fellow Core students -- if you use books in the library but do not check them out, be sure to place them on the orange sorting shelves in the stacks when you are finished, so the librarians can return them to their proper place.  Also, if you have checked out a book and are finished with it, try to return it to the library as soon as possible, so other students working on similar topics have the chance to check it out.
