“I saw it [the Communist Party] as an action organization.  Things were happening.  And the kind of things that were happening I didn’t regard as subversion of the government, I regarded it as good for me and for other blacks…  The struggle against Jim Crow and baseball.  Putting people who had been evicted from their houses back in their buildings…[The] interracial activities that they developed” (Schrecker, 110)
