A.   Recognize the characteristics of a primary source.

B.   Recognize the characteristics of a secondary source.

C.   Access electronic journal articles that are examples of primary sources.

D.   Access electronic journal articles that are examples of secondary sources.

E.   Select, read and summarize a primary source article on the topic of the Philippines.

F.   Select, read and summarize a secondary source article on the topic of Filipino Americans.

Use JSTOR to find an article on the Philippines written between 1898 and 1941.

1.   Access JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org/jstor/) from the Libraries’ Homepage (www.lib.uci.edu) by selecting Article Databases, and clicking on J from the Article databases by title list.

2.   Click on the link to the JSTOR electronic journal archive.

3.   Select the Search option in JSTOR.

4.   Enter the word Philippines in the Basic Search box.

5.   To search, you must select one or more disciplines or journals.   Select the disciplines of Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology.

6.   Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and refine your search by limiting the publication dates to articles published between 1898 and 1941.

7.   Then press Begin Search.   Notice that you can Sort  Results by Highest scoring items first (relevance), Most recently published items first, or Oldest items first.   Decide which of these options will be of the most use to you in identifying articles as primary sources.

8.   Scroll through the list of results and select an article that illustrates the United States’ attitudes and assumptions toward the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century (1898-1930).

9.   Write the citation for the article you found in correct MLA format and answer the following questions.

a.   What kind of journal was this article written for?   Was it written for   popular journal, intended for a general audience, or is it intended for a more scholarly audience?   What disciplines or field of study might have been interested in this article at the time it was written?   Who might be interested in it today?

b.   Is this an example of a primary or a secondary source?   Describe the characteristics that influenced your classification of the article as primary or secondary.
